Alonso De la Vallina Subero

About me

My name is Alonso de la Vallina Subero, and I’m from Mexico. I studied for my law degree at Anahuac University in Mexico City, and I’m a registered lawyer. I’m interested in law, of course, but I also love traveling, which is why my IE Experience is a perfect fit. Studying at IE Law School has allowed me to combine my passions.

“There is no limit to what you can do at IE Law School. It’s amazing and has been the best three months of my life.”

Alonso De la Vallina Subero

From Mexico City to Madrid into the world of international law

Driven by travel and the law, Alonso de la Vallina Subero found a unique way to explore his interests. Alonso completed his undergraduate studies in Mexico City and received his license to practice law there. When he learned about an opportunity to continue pursuing his education in Spain, he knew it was the perfect way to live out both his passions at once.

When Alonso graduated with his law degree, he started working in criminal law. His focus shifted when he moved to a new role at a bigger law firm and began working in the labor and employment department. Alonso was ready to climb the career ladder again when he discovered the Master of Laws (LL.M.). It’s common for lawyers in Mexico to stop at a bachelor’s degree, so he knew the program would help him stand apart. His sentiment was confirmed when he met an IE Law School alum and left thrilled to find out about the opportunities ahead.

IE Law School’s Master of Laws (LL.M.) allows students to take their legal careers beyond borders, which was a huge incentive for Alonso. It also offers a Postgraduate Diploma of Expert (PgDip) in one of four distinct specializations—something he saw as a great chance to further expand his professional profile. Due to his love for travel and extensive background in criminal and labor law, Alonso chose to specialize in International Dispute Resolution.

The International Dispute Resolution specialization is designed jointly with the ICC International Court of Arbitration to nurture new talent in this critical field. In addition to the opportunities availed through this partnership, students also participate in a unique Legal Immersion Experience to see firsthand the inner workings of real companies in the professional world. Alonso’s week-long experience took him to Paris where he was able to gain insights from inside the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), which he notes as a highlight of his time at IE Law School. “Understanding what goes on at the ICC is really important for students pursuing a career in arbitration and mediation. Meeting the people who work there was very impressive.” Alonso and his classmates also visited a leading law firm and networked with several Paris-based legal professionals. This deep dive showed him what it’s like to be a lawyer in France—a completely different experience than what he’s used to.

Alonso has nothing but great things to say about his experience studying the Master of Laws (LL.M.). “There is no limit to what you can do at IE Law School. It’s amazing and has been the best three months of my life.” He’s especially glad for the chance to connect with incredible people from around the world, including his classmates, students from other programs and his professors. Alonso has noticed that everyone is excited because they are where they want to be, and the professors, in particular, are incredibly prepared and very nice, making for a vibrant learning environment.

As advice for future students thinking about pursuing the Master of Laws (LL.M.), Alonso would encourage you to turn in your application way ahead of the deadline. He also suggests forming groups for projects with people from different backgrounds and experiences to benefit from diverse worldviews. As a final tip, Alonso would remind you to live out the IE Experience in full—take everything you can out of the program, learn from your professors and classmates, and truly live the Madrid life.
