About me

My name is Paul Lanusse, and I’m originally from the French Basque Country, but I’ve lived in the countryside of Bordeaux my whole life. I’m an outgoing, self-confident and passionate person who thrives in social settings as they fuel my energy and excitement. I would also describe myself as a bit stubborn in that when I’m invested in something, I go all in until I accomplish my goal; I don’t back down easily. I’m deeply passionate about writing, surfing, cinema, literature and philosophy.

"I love the duality between the theory learned in class and the practical insights gained from opportunities such as the trip to the European Parliament or the lectures given by fascinating people."

Working toward a future full of creativity and global engagement

Born in the French Basque Country and raised just outside of Bordeaux in the little village of Castets et Castillon, Paul Lanusse has had a unique academic path. His journey started in the UK where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, politics and economics. But by graduation, Paul still wasn’t certain what he wanted to do career-wise. So he took a gap year to intern in the financial sector and work as a salesman at a French startup, Matera. These experiences helped him gain practical knowledge of the way companies operate in the process. He also used this time to save up for a transformative backpacking trip around South America.

Paul’s travels took him through Nicaragua, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Brazil. But after six months on the trail, he was ready to dive back into his studies. Since he had previously studied in an international environment, he was looking for a master’s program that would offer him a similar framework. Paul was interested in European studies and started searching for a program that fit his needs. IE University was his first choice: it stood out to him early on due to its global acclaim, academic rigor and unique opportunities. Plus, the chance to continue practicing his Spanish after traveling through South America was the icing on the cake.

Passionate about writing, surfing, cinema, literature, philosophy and Muay Thai, Paul explains that his interests align with his aspirations. He hopes to build a career in diplomacy or policy consulting, or as part of an international organization. However, his big-picture idea is to work in the political sector in a role that allows him to blend creativity, communication and global engagement, a desire that led him to the Master in International Relations.

‘’Whether your focus is toward the private and business sector, NGOs and public sector or even just a geographical focus, the Master in International Relations combines it all.’’

Looking for extensive knowledge in the field, Paul knew the program would help him develop his oral advocacy and writing skills in a way that would allow him to have a positive impact at a global level. He aims to make a difference in his own unique way, and he felt that IE University would be the best place to learn how to do just that. Today, the diversity he’s found in the classroom along with the university’s immersive learning environment pushes Paul to work relentlessly toward his goals.

This ambitious student is impressed by the duality of the program, specifically between the theory learned in class complemented by the practical insights gained from opportunities in real life. For instance, students from the program recently went on a trip to the European Parliament; they also receive lectures regularly from renowned professionals. Further, the Master in International Relations gives Paul the chance to work alongside like-minded people from all over the world. This allows students to build a supportive community where they can gain perspectives from a variety of cultural and academic backgrounds. The passion in this program is unmatched, according to Paul.

For anyone interested in the Master in International Relations, Paul would say to take the chance. You will enjoy an engaging and friendly international environment where you can learn from highly renowned academic figures who are experts in their fields. He goes on to explain that no matter where your focus is, the program will help launch your career and expand your global network.

And as for Paul’s future, if his career in politics doesn’t pan out, he’d love to start working in cinema as a filmmaker or an actor. We look forward to seeing him make an impact no matter the path he chooses.
