Yao Rong Jin

About me

My name is Yao Rong Jin. I come from a Chinese family but was born and raised in South Africa. I consider myself a person that values integrity and fairness above all else. This is one of the reasons I chose to specialize in international dispute resolution in the Master of Laws (LL.M.) program. I hope my passion for law and international relations combined with IE University’s education will allow me to thrive in a career focussed on conflict resolution.

A career dedicated to solving tomorrow’s problems

Yao Rong Jin - Student Story | IE Law School

Born and raised in South Africa, Yao Rong Jin came to Madrid to study the Master of Laws (LL.M.) at IE University, because it allowed him the opportunity to study a specialization within the master’s program. Combining an interest in law and a passion for international relations, Yao Rong Jin hopes to work in the private international legal sector, resolving cross-border conflicts.

In a world that is experiencing globalization at an astonishing rate, we are more connected now than ever. With cross-border interactions come benefits, but also challenges. Yao Rong has no doubt that disputes over transactions between business and individuals alike are bound to happen. With this in mind, he wants to be prepared to adapt to this globalized world and possess the necessary skills to resolve international legal disputes.

Yao Rong, who describes himself as honest and fair, wishes to dedicate his life to conflict resolution. When looking for a program that could help him reach his goals, he was drawn to the Master of Laws (LL.M.) program at IE University as this allowed him to specialize further within the master’s degree. By choosing the International Dispute Resolution specialization, Yao Rong is on his way to gaining expertise capable of advancing his legal career.

Another aspect of the program that drew him to IE University was its diverse student population. He believes the opportunity to network with such an international group of individuals with different experiences and backgrounds is an invaluable addition to his experience, especially considering his field of specialization.

Not only has IE University’s diverse community contributed to Yao Rong’s experience in terms of networking, but he finds that his diverse class allows for a deeper understanding of international law. Apart from understanding historical or cultural backgrounds that can shape each country’s law system, Yao Rong says that interacting with a diverse class makes him a more empathetic lawyer because he can gain a better understanding of different cultural backgrounds and perspectives.

IE University’s academic rigor and prestige are well-known around the world, but Yao Rong says one thing he did not anticipate when starting his studies at IE University was the level of care and support the university and its faculty provide to its students. Classes on mental health have helped him to learn how to deal with the inherent stress and pressure that comes with a career in law—especially on an international scale. He feels that this holistic approach to education is a groundbreaking aspect of the IE University experience.

Of course, an essential part of any IE University student’s experience is interacting with the university’s qualified and passionate faculty. Noting that practical and theoretical knowledge can vary immensely, Yao Rong says that his professors' real-life experience in the fields that they teach is what truly sets them apart. He appreciates the knowledge and expertise that each professor brings to their class.

Looking towards the future, Yao Rong would be happy to work in South Africa, but he has his eyes on new opportunities around Europe and is specifically looking to work in the United Kingdom, Belgium or Amsterdam. As he continues his search for the next step in his career, Yao Rong is working with IE University Talent and Careers to connect with the alumni community, enhance his resume and prepare for interviews.
