The third paper in the AI4Democracy series, a collaboration between Make.org and MAPLE, explores how AI can enhance legislative engagement and strengthen democratic processes. It highlights four key applications of AI: making policy information more accessible to the public, helping citizens articulate their perspectives clearly, supporting inclusive deliberation by synthesizing public opinion, and monitoring legislative outcomes to ensure accountability. Technology is shaped by the moral and cultural context of its creators, and there is a need to develop AI systems that actively support democratic processes. Drawing from Make.org’s participatory platforms in Europe and MAPLE’s tools for engaging with the Massachusetts legislature, the paper offers practical recommendations for governments to integrate AI into democratic systems effectively.
