Mission of the program
The Transatlantic Relations in a Changing World initiative is a forward-looking program for strengthening the relationship between Europe and the United States through research, discussion and collaborative problem-solving. The program provides a platform to address today’s main transatlantic challenges: defense cooperation, trade, energy security and global governance.
Its cooperation with leading institutions in the United States—Harvard's Belfer Center, Sciences Po, Yale's Jackson School—affirms its commitment to practical policy measures and fostering positive change. The program’s annual flagship event—the Transatlantic Conference—brings together policymakers, academics and industry leaders with the goal of tackling all the most important challenges currently faced and the opportunities the changing geopolitical environment presents.
Transatlantic Bridge Conference
On June 14-16, a new edition of the Transatlantic Bridge Conference was celebrated in Bologna. This initiative was curated by the Global Policy Center (GPC) within IE School of Politics, Economics & Global Affairs, and is being held with our partners at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs, and PSIA Sciences Po.
Since its inception in 2018, the Transatlantic Bridge Conference has rapidly become a pivotal platform for fostering US-Europe collaboration, and has brought together top policymakers, scholars, and industry leaders to tackle pressing transatlantic issues. The Transatlantic Bridge Alliance was formed with the goal of strengthening US-EU ties through informed dialogue on democracy, human rights, defense policy, trade, technology, and environmental sustainability.
2024 edition
This year, the Conference was also be the ground for the presentation of a new GPC-led report over the weekend “Beyond Electoral Uncertainty: Rethinking the Transatlantic Alliance in Times of Change” which you may ind in the GPC’s publications page
Transatlantic Bridge Foresight Workshop 2024
The Transatlantic Bridge Strategic Foresight Workshop took place in Madrid on March 11th & 12th, 2024, and involved scholars from the four partner schools as well as leading experts and decision-makers in the field.
The foresight exercise is part of an initiative lead by Yale University, Jonhs Hopkins SAIS, SciencesPo PSIA, and IE SPEGA GPC.
This year´s edition focused on the potential impact of the 2024 elections in the United States, the European Parliament, and other countries such as India, South Africa and Mexico, on various key dimensions of the transatlantic relationship. The main policy areas of the foresight workshop are (1) Foreign, Security & Defense Policy, (2) Environment, Energy & Industrial Policy, (3) Trade, Technology & Innovation Policy, and (4) Democracy, Human Rights & the Rule of Law.
2024 edition
The main deliverable of this workshop is the publication of a final report constituted of 4 policy briefs that will propose specific policy recommendations in the above-mentioned core areas to key EU and US institutions.
The report served as the thematic backbone of the broader Transatlantic Bridge Conference 2024 that was celebrated in Bologna, Italy on June 14-16.

Transatlantic Bridge Conference 2023 Edition
The 2023 Transatlantic Conference took place in Madrid and Segovia on 2-4 June, and was jointly organized by the IE School of Politics, Economics and Global Affairs (SPEGA), the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs, Sciences Po Paris School of International Affairs and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).
This high-level, closed-door event gathered top academic experts, senior practitioners from the Atlantic space and current and former fellows from all the organizing universities. Participants will address issues of particular importance to the politics, security, and economic dimensions of the US European relationship and the wider global sphere.
The Transatlantic Relations Initiative (TRI) aimed to foster informed debate and draw practical recommendations on how transatlantic relations can best navigate a rapidly changing and increasingly challenging global landscape. and it was renamed Transatlantic Bridge in 2024.
The sessions explored how the Ukraine war had led to a new era for closer EU-US cooperation on defense and security, energy and raw materials. Panelists discussed collaboration but also tensions on trade and technology, as well as varying transatlantic approaches to developments in Asia, the Indo-Pacific and Latin America.
Transatlantic Bridge Conference 2020 Edition
The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School and the IE School of Global and Public Affairs have joined the Rafael del Pino Foundation to promote dialogue on transatlantic relations. In this sense, on July 2, 2020, the meeting titled “Redefining inclusive transatlantic security in the Covid era” took place through the online platform www.frdelpino.es. (videos and photos in web)
Transatlantic Bridge Conference 2018 Edition
Description: The 2018 Transatlantic Conference was co-hosted by the IE School of Politics, Economics and Global Affairs and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in partnership with the Rafael del Pino Foundation. The gathering, held in Madrid and Segovia, brought together Harvard and IE faculty, senior corporate and foundation executives, journalists, government officials, and pre-eminent scholars from across the globe. Discussions focused on a rapidly weakening transatlantic relationship, the Trump Administration’s America First strategy and its impact on NATO, U.S.-EU relations, trade, and populism. + download in web
