In this thirteenth episode, we discuss the role of civil society in business ethics with Gonzalo Fernández Atela, lawyer and Secretary of the Advisory Board of Fundación Hay Derecho. We explore his career and the Foundation’s initiatives to promote the rule of law, transparency and meritocracy in business.

Our host Enrique Aznar, academic director of the IE-Elecnor Observatory on Sustainable Compliance, talks to Gonzalo Fernández Atela about his career, his experience in regulatory compliance, and the initiatives of Fundación Hay Derecho. Gonzalo shares his vision on how business ethics and transparency are essential for a just and sustainable society.

Gonzalo Fernández Atela highlights the mission of Fundación Hay Derecho: “To defend and promote the rule of law, to go against corruption and in favor of transparency, equal opportunities and meritocracy”. The episode discusses how ethics in business is not only possible, but beneficial, using practical examples such as meritocracy in Human Resources and the importance of transparency in companies.

In addition, Gonzalo analyzes the new ethical challenges facing companies in a globalized and technologically advanced world: “Globalization and information technologies are favoring cleanliness and the path towards ethics in business,” he says. He also highlights the importance of new technologies in promoting transparency.

The conversation also addresses the role of civil society in promoting and maintaining an ethical culture within business organizations, and how Fundación Hay Derecho contributes to this cause with initiatives such as the Dedómetro, a study of the merit and capacity of leaders in public entities.

Finally, Gonzalo Fernández Atela reflects on the future of business ethics, suggesting that transparency and meritocracy will become increasingly important thanks to new technologies and the growing demand for corporate responsibility.
