IE Foundation presents the II Study on the Economic Impact of Golf in Spain, reinforcing its role as a key driver of the economy and tourism
IE Foundation, in collaboration with the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG) and the Spanish Golf Course Association (AECG), presented the results of the II Study on the Economic Impact of Golf in Spain at an event held at the IE Tower.
The event brought together influential figures from the world of golf, local authorities, and experts in economics and tourism. This new report, led by Professor Juan Santaló, Professor of Strategic Management at IE University, highlights the significant economic contributions of golf to Spain, solidifying its position as a key driver of both the economy and tourism.
The study shows that the golf industry continues to generate a significant economic impact, not only through its direct contribution to GDP but also by attracting high-quality tourism, generating employment, and promoting sustainable development in various regions of the country. According to the report’s data, golf is established as a strategic tool for boosting economic growth, especially in areas with high tourism activity.
Gonzaga Escauriaza, President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, emphasized during the event: “This second edition of the study confirms that golf is no longer seen as merely a tourist attraction but has become a key economic driver for our country. The data shows that 7 out of every 8 euros generated by golf benefit other sectors, highlighting its multiplier effect and its contribution to reducing the seasonality of tourism.”
Another significant conclusion of the report is the impact of golf on the Spanish real estate market. In 2023, golf tourists owned 382,755 properties in Spain, with a total value of €82.342 billion, reflecting the long-term commitment of international visitors to the country.
As Spain continues to lead in golf tourism across Europe, the report indicates that the future of the industry is promising. Professor Juan Santaló, the lead author of the report, noted: “The main takeaway is that golf in Spain generates a significant impact on complementary sectors, solidifying its role as a European leader in golf tourism.”
The event concluded with a roundtable moderated by sports journalist Guillermo Salmerón, featuring Gonzaga Escauriaza, President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, Luis Nigorra, President of the Spanish Golf Course Association, and Juan Santaló. The discussion underscored the importance of continued support from both public and private institutions to further enhance golf’s contributions to Spain’s economy and society.
