IEU Sandbox

Discovery Activities and Discovery Lab

What is IEU Sandbox?

The IEU Sandbox is a program for all IEU undergraduate students who are eager to meet others and learn how to achieve their goals, or even figure out what their goals could be! The IEU Sandbox offers students the opportunity to explore and experiment, providing a space to discover new skills and mindsets and make new friends in the process. A sandbox, in general, is a space for play where you can create things in a supportive environment. IE University has several expert technical units, including our Robotics Lab and Fab Lab, and specialized faculties and schools in areas such as Politics, Law, Communications, Business, Design & Architecture, and more.

These areas support IE’s mission to drive innovation. Learning at IE does not begin and end in the classroom. The IEU Sandbox is a beyond-the-classroom initiative designed to spark students’ awareness about innovation and its applicability to their future goals, and to provide opportunities to learn skills related to innovation to build profiles most sought after by potential future employers.

IEU Sandbox is committed to helping students be their best selves, both individually and collectively. We recognize that IEU students often have difficulty meeting peers from other bachelor programs or sections. We also understand that the most effective innovation comes from diverse perspectives. The IEU Sandbox offers students the opportunity to meet and connect with peers from across all undergraduate schools, while providing access to expertise and resources within all our schools and labs. The IEU Sandbox’s activities are categorized into Discovery Activities and Discovery Lab. The Discovery Activities are open to all students who register, while the Discovery Lab is a cohort-based program requiring an application (see below).

Discovery Activities

Series of guest speakers for small to medium gatherings of students aimed at opening their minds to potentially new career paths in which entrepreneurial mindsets are applied.

Participate in problem-solving challenges, innovation games, improv, hackathon sprints, “co-founder-matching,” etc.

Learn new skills through workshops on topics like low-code/no-code solutions, Creativity, Asking the Right Questions, Generative AI Hacks, Designing Your Life and Prototyping.

Discovery Lab

If you are keen to explore a potential entrepreneurial opportunity (whether it could eventually be a business or a non-profit enterprise) but only have an idea in mind, the Discovery Lab is the resource for you. IE University has a robust entrepreneurial community with many opportunities, which can sometimes be overwhelming. The Discovery Lab is often the first step of the entrepreneurial journey, providing training and mentorship to test whether your idea could be viable. One key mistake in building a startup or entrepreneurial venture is creating something no one wants to buy. The Discovery Lab helps you determine if your idea has potential. Upon successful completion, teams will be invited to join IE University’s Venture Lab Incubator.

The Discovery Lab is for individuals (initially, but with assistance to meet potential team members) or small teams. Apply here to join the lab and get more information. Apply by February 9th to join the Spring Semester’s cohort.
