Inés Cano Gozalo

About me

I’m from Madrid, and that’s where I studied law and philosophy, at the Complutense University of Madrid. I've always liked philosophy more than law, but I didn't want to choose just one specialization and miss out on the other. After reading a book about the problems that can arise from the combination of new technologies and the momentum of capitalism, I knew I wanted to focus my studies on law and technology, without losing sight of my humanities background.

I’m an inquisitive person, with a sense of humor and a lot of restless energy. I like reading, listening to music and watching films. I aspire to become a professional in the new tech facet of the legal world, and to use my work to contribute to the betterment of society.

"We want to put technology at the service of the people."

Inés Cano Gozalo

Why did you choose IE University for your master’s?

IE University offered me a dual master’s degree that met my needs and ambitions. On one hand, it prepared me for the future with a fantastic hands-on approach, completely different from anything I’d seen during my undergrad. On the other, it was also complemented with the specialization I was interested in, allowing me to learn about the field of entrepreneurship and new technologies without shutting any doors.

Tell us something that surprised you about IE University and the program you’re currently studying.

When you work in a group, you get this great experience that goes beyond numbers and grades. I’ve learned a lot about people and about myself, which will undoubtedly be an advantage in the professional world. I’ve also been really lucky with my classmates. The atmosphere is great.

Tell us about your experience with the IBM Watson Challenge. What did you learn?

For the IBM Watson Challenge, we split into two groups. We created a legal chatbot designed to make individuals aware of their right to free legal aid. Many people who need a lawyer don’t take that step and get one. They think it will be expensive and excessively bureaucratic, or they simply don’t know enough about it. We want to put technology at the service of the people.

I think we learned a lot from creating the pitch itself, because we had to figure out the chatbot’s legal application, design it and implement it—from start to finish—with a business plan built in.

Where would you like to work after completing your master’s degree? And how is IE University helping you achieve that goal?

I feel very fortunate to be able to say that I’ve landed an internship at the firm I wanted. IE University encourages initiative and empowers our autonomy in the selection process, all while providing us with practical knowledge that enhances our skills and makes us more competitive candidates.

What advice would you give someone who’s considering the program?

I would tell them to take advantage of this opportunity to learn. I’d say that it’s a challenging program, but not to let stress and burnout get the better of them. Grades aren’t so important that you should miss out on enjoying the full experience. Obstacles are best faced with calm and confidence.

Where do you see yourself in five or 10 years?

In five to 10 years, I’d like to be a highly competent professional, to have achieved my current personal and professional goals and to be focusing on new projects.

How would you sum up your time at IE University?

IE University has pushed me to develop skills I didn’t know I had, to leverage my strengths and to persevere in difficult situations. I have gained greater self-control and broadened my knowledge. It has been a stimulating, enriching and fun program, and one of the most intense years of my life.
