IE Law School and ECIJA launch Digital Law Observatory
The project is a think tank focused on the impact of technology on the economy, with the support of the public and private sectors and academia.
IE Law School and ECIJA officially launched the Digital Law Observatory at an event celebrated on November 22 and attended by more than a hundred representatives of various areas of the public and private sectors.
The Digital Law Observatory was created with the goal of exploring and researching the different legal dimensions and implications of the digital economy. The Observatory aims to become a platform for legal and academic research and dissemination within this new legal framework.
The Digital Law Observatory is a think tank focused on the legal repercussions of the current technological revolution and the inexorable expansion of the digital ecosystem, structured around four vertical axes: artificial intelligence; metaverse and tokenomics; legaltech; and data governance. It will comprise an advisory board made up of renowned legal experts from Big Tech (Amazon and Facebook), the Spanish Data Protection Agency and the judiciary. The Observatory’s academic director is Macarena Plaza, Head of International Corporate Development and Legal Innovation at IE Law School.
“IE Law School is proud to be launching this Observatory, which will serve as a space for debate between the private, public and academic sectors on the legal impact of the digitalization of society.”
Soledad Atienza, Dean of IE Law School
The Observatory aims to respond to the need for a Spanish-language reference center for research and debate on the impact of technology on the regulatory environment. It will also examine how future legislative changes affect the protection of digital users, while continuing to promote innovation and creativity.
“IE Law School is proud to be launching this Observatory, which will serve as a space for debate between the private, public and academic sectors on the legal impact of the digitalization of society. It will also produce research on the new legal framework of the digital economy, which is supported by the most important players in the digital world,” said Soledad Atienza, Dean of IE Law School.
“We are very excited to build the Digital Law Observatory alongside IE University. The Observatory will be a reference in the Spanish-speaking market and will allow us to study the impact of technology on society and on our sector, pinpointing the ethical, legal and regulatory requirements imposed on us by technology,” said Alejandro Touriño, Managing Partner at ECIJA.
Ana Buitrago, Legal Director at Amazon and member of the Advisory Board of the Digital Law Observatory, said that “without legal certainty, there can be no innovation or progress. The Observatory will play a key role in promoting the development of new technologies as a factor of growth and competitiveness for Spain and the countries in our sphere.”
