IE Lawtomation Days brings together over 100 international experts on automated decision-making and AI in the legal landscape
The event was organized by IE University's Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for Law and Automation (Lawtomation).
Automated decision-making and artificial intelligence in the changing legal landscape was the theme of the second edition of IE Lawtomation Days. On September 28 and 29, more than 100 speakers and almost 200 participants from around the world came together at IE Tower in Madrid. IE Lawtomation Days are unique, interdisciplinary conferences, which serve as meeting points for a wide variety of professionals, academics and researchers from universities, public institutions, companies and law firms from across the globe.
Over 80 papers were presented over the two days, in an event with a very full agenda. Conferences, keynote speeches and roundtables invited participants to reflect upon, and shed some light on, the transformative influence of these emerging technologies on the different areas of law and other sectors. The event is a great collaborative effort, which the dean of IE Law School, Soledad Atienza, recognized at its opening ceremony, where she encouraged participants and organizers to take these topics to the classroom.
Issues such as the role of human decisions in automated decision-making; the role of AI in the workplace; the economic, social and environmental impact of new technologies and their impact on human and social rights; data protection; governance of human biodata; information manipulation and disinformation; and algorithmic transparency in automated systems all featured in the various expert panels.Â
The event was organized by IE University's Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for Law and Automation (Lawtomation), a hub of expertise and knowledge on the impact of automation on law that promotes excellence in teaching and research. The Centre is co-funded by the European Commission, within the framework of the Erasmus+ program.
Francisco de Elizalde, director of Lawtomation and a professor at IE Law School, highlighted the importance of the Centre’s multidisciplinary approach, and its collaboration with more than 20 researchers from various IE University schools, such as IE Law School, IE Business School and IE School of Science and Technology.
