On March 16th IE Exponential Learning hosted an event to honor women in the data science field during which the winner of the IE Data Science Bootcamp Women in Data Scholarship competition was announced.
Teresa Martin-Retortillo, the Executive President of ieXL delivered the opening remarks and introduced our panel of fantastic speakers. Ana Teresa Lehmann, Portuguese Secretary of State, was a special guest and was accompanied by Isabel Caballero, Christina Stathopoulos, Christabelle Santos who were representing Amadeus, Google, and EY respectively. Also present were Catarina Silva, Machine Translation Engineer at Unbabel, Jose Luis Hidalgo, VP of Analytics and Data Science at Nextail and David Rey Blanco, Chief Data Officer at Idealista.
The discussion from the panelists was insightful and conveyed a clear picture of the various practical applications of a Data Science background. The panelists generously made themselves available to answer the keen questions of the attendees, who were seeking as to how they can enter this field.
The desserts of this event were catered by Halula, a small business started by IE Alumni Maria Ximena Duarte Agudelo and her sister Lucia Duarte Agudelo. Their culinary endeavors began originally as a club during Maria’s time at IE.
The IE Data Science Bootcamp team was pleased to name the winner of the Women in Data Scholarship, Gergana Koleva, from Bulgaria. While it was difficult to choose a winner from the pool of candidates, Gergana’s strong profile stood out. Having lived in New York, Boston, and Copenhagen and worked in the fields of Public Healthcare Policy and Journalism, Gergana’s goal is to implement data science to maximize the ability to help people access health services.
