Luis Ángel Ullivarri

Luis Angel Ullivarri is adjunct professor in the Operations area of the IE since 2008. After working for fifteen years in the international business arena, during which he obtained a couple of executive degrees at IE Business School, Luis Angel returned to IE to dedicate part of his time researching and teaching Operations management where he is currently leading the Executive Program in Operations and Competitiveness

A strong belief in the need of reengineering business processes is what has defined the career of Luis Angel Ullivarri. Starting with intra-corporate production processes, moving to inter-corporate collaboration and coordination, and finally reaching the full value chain of a company in the society, he believes that technology and operations are a winning combination in the management of the business.

One of his favorite mottos is “Don’t pave the cow’s path”, meaning that, even when he is a strong supporter of technology deployment for supporting the business, only when this deployment is targeting the key business processes with the right approach –Lean&Agile- they become a real competitive advantage.

With these ideas in mind and based on his previous experience, Luis Angel tries to convey his students the potential of this approach, advise them the challenges they will encounter and provide them with the tools necessary to succeed.

In his teaching he maintains a pragmatic approach to process management issues, emphasizing the need for a cross functional approach while optimizing companies’ operations and business processes. His industry experience acquired not only in the areas of operations and manufacturing but also in sales, IT, consultancy, data and project management allows him to illustrate the cases and examples discussed in class from different perspectives.

Luis Angel is originally from Spain. He is married and has four kids, which take his scarce time left by his current job and the lecturing at the IE. He is working on his Ph.D, related with dynamic coordination and how the companies learn to self-coordinate. He also serves as reserve officer in the Spanish Army, where he spends a few weeks every year, working in the Command and Control Centre of the Air Force.
