IE and ECIJA launch the Digital Law Observatory

IE and ECIJA have launched the Digital Law Observatory, a think tank on the impact of technology on the economy, supported by the public sector, private sector, and academia.

IE Law School and ECIJA inaugurated the Digital Law Observatory at an event held on November 20th, attended by over a hundred representatives from various sectors of the public and private spheres.

The Digital Law Observatory aims to delve into and research the various legal dimensions and implications arising from the digital economy to become a space for legal and academic research and dissemination of the new legal framework.

It is configured as a think tank on the legal repercussions of the current technological revolution and the unstoppable expansion of the digital ecosystem, focusing on four verticals: artificial intelligence, metaverse and tokenomics, legaltech, and data governance. It will be composed of an Advisory Board consisting of reputable legal professionals from Big Tech (Amazon and Facebook), the Spanish Data Protection Agency, and the judiciary. Its academic direction falls under Macarena Plaza, responsible for corporate development and legal innovation at IE Law School.

“It is an honor for IE Law School to create this Observatory, which will serve as a space for debate among the private, public, and academic sectors about the legal impact of the digitalization of society.” – Soledad Atienza, Dean of IE Law School

The Observatory meets the need for a reference center in the Spanish language for exploration and discussion on the impact of technology on regulation. Additionally, it will analyze how future legislative changes affect the protection of digital users, while still being tools to promote innovation and creativity.

“We are tremendously excited to build, alongside IE, the leading Digital Law Observatory in the Spanish-speaking market, through which we will investigate the impact of technology on society and our sector, identifying the ethical, legal, and regulatory needs that technology demands of us.” – Alejandro Touriño, Managing Partner at ECIJA.

Ana Buitrago, Legal Director of Amazon and member of the Advisory Board of the Observatory, stated, “Without legal certainty, innovation and progress are not possible. The Observatory will play a key role in driving the development of new technologies as a factor of growth and competitiveness for Spain and our neighboring countries.”
