The IE School of Architecture and Design and Arup discuss the opportunities in BIM methodology for project management

Under the title, “BIM: Management, risk and opportunity” the conference brought together experts from leading companies and institutions like Acciona, FC Barcelona, Ferrovial, SEGITTUR, Sacyr, Neinver, OHL or the German-initiative Planen-Bauen 4.0, to debate the risks and opportunities of BIM beyond 3D visualization.

The event was presented by the IE School of Architecture and Design Dean, Martha Thorne, and the Direct of Arup in Spain, Mark Chown. The conference was attended by over a hundred experts from fields such as architecture, design and construction, both from the private and public sector, who analyzed some of the most important considerations needed for the optimum implementation of the BIM.

The first panel, “The Implementation of BIM: Do the public and private sector require two different points of view?” moderated by David Castro, Associate Director of Arup, with participation of Ilka May, Director at Planen-Bauen 4.0, Carlos Romero, Director of Investigation, Development and Touristic Innovation at SEGITTUR, José Antonio López, Director of Design at Neinver, and David Cano, Project Coordinator of FC Barcelona. The speakers highlighted some key issues for a successful digital transformation in business: the importance of being informed and correctly assessing the possibility of improving their business processes through BIM, choosing only those which incorporate real value, and adapting them to the company.

The second panel, “Who benefits from the BIM projects?”counted with the participation of experts such as Ricardo Martínez, BIM Manager in OHL, Teodoro Álvarez and Ricardo Bittini, Directors of Design and Innovation at Ferrovial, Joana Melo, BIM Manager of Sacyr, and Fernando Blanco, Director of the Department of BIM and 3D Simulation at Acciona; who highlighted that in an environment where the biggest projects center around data, the key is successful data management. They also gave special importance to the impact the BIM methodology has on minimizing project risks, and the importance of correctly balancing the managerial and technical aspects of each project, in such an important, and long-term vision, job as is a BIM Manager.

Both panels highlighted the risks and successes of the BIM implementation in Spain and encouraged a collaborative process between all those involved in the construction sector in the process of improving the digitalization of the sector.
