IE University and IFC join forces to drive EdTech innovation in higher education

IE University and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, recently kicked-off the Educational Innovation Tour at IE Tower, IE University’s new campus in Madrid. The inaugural event brought together leaders from Latin American and Spanish universities to exchange knowledge on digital transformation, explore the potential of cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), and address the challenges of expanding access to quality education.

Held from November 11-14, 2024, under IFC’s Digital for Tertiary Education Program (D4TEP), supported by Spain’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Enterprise (MINECO), the four-day initiative brought together leaders from 17 Latin American and Spanish universities. The event also featured pitches from EdTech companies, fostering opportunities for future collaboration and the exchange of innovative ideas.

“We are thrilled to join forces with IFC on this initiative,” said Juan José Güemes, Senior Vice President of Strategy and Corporate Development at IE University, “and to share how technologies like our ‘Virtual’ public speaking platform, immersive virtual reality experiences, and innovative Generative AI tools can empower students and educators to create impactful learning experiences. At IE University, we have developed Gen AI solutions that support our faculty in personalizing learning, assist students in mastering complex topics through adaptive resources, and enhance institutional efficiency by automating key processes. These tools exemplify our commitment to leveraging technology for inclusive, student-centric, and scalable educational models.”

As higher education gross enrollment rates in Latin America have surged—rising from under 23% in 2000 to 58% in 2022[CM1] —access remains inequitable. Low-income households account for just 25% of higher education enrollment, highlighting the need for scalable, innovative solutions.

“Breakthroughs in education technology, most notably AI empowered solutions, provide a transformative opportunity for universities to bridge this gap by offering affordable degree programs, implementing innovative learning models, and expanding access to education for underserved populations,” said Chris McCahan, Global Head of Education at IFC. “Our partnership with IE University underscores the critical role of technology and strategic alliances in shaping inclusive, efficient, and student-focused education systems.”

The D4TEP Innovation Tour featured strategic discussions hosted by higher education leaders. Topics included AI-driven tools to personalize learning, enhance student outcomes, and streamline institutional processes, as well as strategies for scaling digital transformation through cost-effective solutions tailored to diverse student needs.

This collaboration represents a significant step toward accelerating digital transformation in higher education. By sharing best practices and opening the door for future partnerships, IE University and IFC are helping institutions expand educational access, improve efficiency, and deliver personalized, student-centric learning experiences.
