Akosua Atobrah Kissi-Prah

About me

My name is Akosua Atobrah Kissi-Prah and I am from Ghana. Prior to coming to Madrid, I lived in Accra, the capital of Ghana. I easily adapt to situations, which has contributed to my smooth stay in Spain. Learning new things every day gives me a broader outlook on life, and this has taught me to appreciate the minds of others. My determination and assertiveness drive me to persevere through challenges.

In my spare time, I surf the internet for information on what is new in the world. My curiosity has led me to explore some cool places in Madrid and in the future, I plan to discover even more intriguing places in other parts of Spain.

“Being at IE University is like being in every part of the world at the same time, as the diversity in people and culture is not something that you can easily find anywhere.”

From Accra to Madrid: a journey fueled by curiosity and determination

Akosua describes herself as a warm, open person who adapts quickly to new situations—qualities that have proved a distinct advantage in her career journey so far. After studying Spanish and linguistics at the University of Ghana, she went on to work as a protocol officer at the State Protocol Department in Ghana. She’s always enjoyed helping others, particularly those who have been deprived of their rights or otherwise disadvantaged in life. “Challenging myself and going beyond my capabilities to see others well and thriving has always brought me much fulfillment,” she explains. It was this passion that inspired Akosua to work with multilateral institutions and NGOs as a way of contributing to the well-being of others.

Her undergraduate degree and work experience not only sparked Akosua’s interest in global affairs, but led her to see the potential of an international career. This was one of the factors that attracted her to IE University, which she describes as “like being in every part of the world at the same time, as the diversity in culture and people is not something that you can easily find anywhere.” As a bonus, studying in Madrid has also enabled her to build on her existing Spanish language competence.

Although Akosua knew she wanted to pursue a course of study in international development, she was faced with a wide choice of programs at a variety of institutions. However, IE University’s Master in International Development stood out from the crowd due to its close partnership with the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC).  The prospect of being taught by experts from the UNSSC was particularly attractive, as it provided an excellent way to network and acquire in-depth knowledge of some of the institutions she aspires to work with.

“Choosing IE University came with the benefit of being taught by experts from UNSSC.”

Apart from the generous offer of scholarships available at IE University, another important factor for Akosua was, she says, “the passion with which they communicated and lived out their purpose, goals and standards,” adding that “the evident transformation in the people they train and mentor is an anchor that anyone looking to study here can hold on to.” She describes her experience so far as “nothing short of inspiring” and says she’s constantly challenged to learn, unlearn and progress toward her goals.

In addition to praising her classmates as “intelligent, ambitious and change-driven individuals” who have had a great positive influence on her, Akosua has been impressed by the engaging, practical approach to teaching and learning. “Overall, the dynamics in the classroom are a good blend of rigorousness and fun, both of which are essential for steady growth,” she says.

Akosua’s advice to anyone considering pursuing the Master in International Development? “Be ready for transformational change!” She advises prospective students to make the most of all the opportunities for growth that the program presents, adding “While you ace your academics, don’t forget to network, discover Spain and make the best of your experience here!”
