Pedro Gete
My name is Pedro Gete, and I’m a tenured Professor of Economics and Finance at IE University. My passion for Economics has taken me all over the world—I’ve worked in world-renowned institutions educating the next generation of economists. I love teaching my students how we can use econ skills to analyze the world around us. In fact, once you begin to think in this way, it’s hard to switch it off. Economics is such a practical subject and is connected to pretty much everything we read in the news. It is very convenient to use economic theory to understand the current events in the world, and predict what might happen next. There are so many benefits to studying Economics, no matter the career path you choose. It’s an incredibly versatile and fun subject!

A lifelong dedication to learning
Pedro Gete is driven by an undiluted passion for economics. His illustrious career has led him all over the world, with stints at Georgetown University, the University of Chicago and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Now working full-time at IE University, he loves encouraging students to embrace analytical thinking and develop a flair for data.
With specialisms in macroeconomics, finance and real estate, Pedro’s love for economics is far-reaching. He considers it the basis for everything we do, and it’s the practical applications that Pedro finds particularly fascinating. He believes that the skills students learn are essential for any career, teaching them empirical tools and concepts that are widely in-demand.
So why IE University? For Pedro, it was an easy choice. He always considered it to be one of the world’s leading institutions in economics and finance, and was thrilled to join IE Business School as a professor in 2018. He loves the fact that high-quality research and teaching is always the priority. Of course, it wasn’t only academic benefits that drew him here. He jumped at the chance to live in Spain, admitting that the quality of life here is fantastic!
Besides being a great place to work, Pedro believes that IE University is the perfect place to study economics. He respects the institution’s high ambitions, and resonates with the core values of entrepreneurship and sustainability. These values are reflected in everyday campus life, playing a key role in both teaching and activities. Pedro also highlights the quality of the resources provided by the university, from the library to technology. And all of this, according to Pedro, is compounded by an unrivaled faculty comprising esteemed academics, industry practitioners and policy experts. There’s an incredible variety of skilled professors who have dedicated their careers to economics.
Pedro believes that the Master in Applied Economics teaches students skills to face today’s real-world challenges. It touches on some of the most pertinent subject areas in the field today, including macroeconomics, microeconomics, finance, industrial organization or international economics. Economics also provides us with a powerful way of thinking shaped by game theory, data analysis, programming, and reasoning skills. These tools open the door to a variety of roles across a range of industries. After all, as Pedro comments, a well-trained economist is a highly-valued professional.
His biggest piece of advice? Let your curiosity lead the way. He cites curiosity and ambition as his top qualities for anyone applying for this program. Pedro also recommends studying as much as possible and taking advantage of the vibrant IE University environment. He believes that we never stop learning, and investing in our education is one of the best things we can do for ourselves.
