A DUAL DEGREE FOR A DYNAMIC WORLD
The program begins in Madrid at IE University. You will spend three terms mastering the fundamentals of international relations through various core courses, including international relations theory, technology of innovation, statistics and data analysis, ethics, and project management. You can choose a specialization in a specific region and one of three focus areas: Geopolitics and Diplomacy, International Economics and Business, or Global Governance and Cooperation. Finally, the year culminates with either a thesis or a practical capstone project that allows you to collaborate with real-world organizations.
The journey continues in Toronto at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy, where your focus will shift to public policy with a summer of electives, followed by a rigorous year of core and elective courses. The courses cover a range of topics, including micro- and macroeconomics, program evaluation and governance. During this time, you will also undertake a policy-research-based capstone project, while the Munk School’s career support team helps you secure a policy-relevant summer internship with a global reach.

Year 1 - IE University

The first year at IE University is dedicated to the Master in International Relations, where you’ll begin a comprehensive exploration of global dynamics. The curriculum is organized into major learning streams that include Management and Analytical Skills, alongside deeper dives into Geopolitics and Diplomacy, International Economics and Business, and Global Governance and International Cooperation. You’ll choose a specialization that aligns with your career aspirations, ensuring a tailored educational experience.
Classes are led by a mix of esteemed professors and seasoned professionals who bring real-world insights directly into the classroom. You will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in diverse settings such as governmental agencies, international corporations and non-governmental organizations. Your first year closes with a significant practical component: you can opt to develop a comprehensive master’s thesis or engage in a Capstone Consulting Project that addresses contemporary issues in international relations.
*During the summer following the first academic year, students will move to the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy in Toronto to complete elective courses in preparation for their second degree.

The academic focus shifts in your second year as you join the Master of Public Policy at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy. This part of the program deepens your understanding of policy analysis and development through core and elective courses in areas like Microeconomics for Policy Analysis, the Social Context of Policy Making, and Politics and the Policy Process. Each course is structured to challenge you academically while providing practical tools and methods for addressing global issues.
Your experience in Toronto will be characterized by a combination of rigorous coursework, interdisciplinary study and a significant research component. You will complete a different capstone project, which will be focused more on policy research. This year is designed not just to broaden your theoretical knowledge, but to hone your skills in crafting effective, data-driven policy solutions.
**During the summer following the second academic year, students will carry out a mandatory internship, which can take place anywhere in the world, with the guidance of the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy.
