Google Developer Students Club Teaches How to Get Ready for Tech Interview

Sci-Tech students learn how to prepare for a tech interview and get insights from industry experts

Google Developer Students Club in collaboration with experts from the technological field organized an event where students of IE Science and Technology School got insights about working in the tech industry and learned how to prepare for a tech interview.

Fernando Gordo, former Lead in a global pioneer in pharmaceuticals, Roche, as well as a Professor of Cloud Computing & IT Infrastructure at IE University shared tips from his experience like the importance of having a T-shaped profile, a term used to describe one’s ability to develop both cross-discipline expertise and deep understanding of a particular expertise.

“In the tech environment, it is extremely valued that you have a broad knowledge about your industry, even if you are not such an expert in every field,” said Jiménez.

Moreover, according to Gordo, young professionals often forget about the significance of soft skills such as the ability to work in groups, which he believes IE is famous for teaching. Related to the group work quality, Jiménez also emphasized the trend of the agile methodology, a way to manage group projects by breaking them into phases.

John Bolorinos, software developer with work experience in Apple, Google Ads, and Waymo, told his story of doing coding interviews at tech companies and, based on that, gave advice to the students. He stressed the significance of practicing on a daily basis. He advised to publish the results of this training on Github, a more efficient professional platform for software developers than LinkedIn. Bolorinos believes that through these practices students will be able to develop mastery. That is why he challenged the attendees to practice right during the event, by solving a problem.

During the job interview, Bolorinos recommended confidence and not to underestimate oneself.

“A little encouragement goes a long way, especially when you feel stuck at some of these programming questions. Develop that voice in your own head. Don’t let the silence drag you down,” said Bolorinos.

The president of the Google Developer Students Club, Keti Sulamanidze, a IE student with experience in tech interviews, highlighted the importance of being able to get advice from the experts.

“Everyone in this field needs to know how to secure a job and be good at interviews. This skill needs special preparation. That is why we decided to host such an event,” said Sulamanidze.
