IE University’s Robotics and AI Lab Officially Opens

The School of Science and Technology offers latest technology for students to develop skills

IE School of Science and Technology has inaugurated its new Robotics and AI Lab, a cutting-edge facility, which represents a major step forward for the development of robotics and AI technologies and will be a hub for students to develop their skills in these fields.

The robot Thiago opened the event with a speech on how technology is constantly evolving and expanding, and the potential benefits of robotics and Artificial Intelligence.

“This lab will bring together students from different fields to explore new and innovative ways in which these technologies can be applied to improve people’s life,” he said.

The new lab, located on the 5th floor of IE Tower, the vertical and technological campus of IE University in Madrid, has 5 stations: smart factories, embedded systems, humanoids, smart transportation and AI/Computer vision.

At the inaugural event, members of IE University’s Robotics Club demonstrated a robotic arm with several functionalities, a robot doing pushups and goalkeeping robot that tracked a ball’s position.

One of the strategies of this school is learning by doing. As Vera Prohaska, 3rd year Bachelor student in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence and Head of Research at this lab, highlighted, students have many starting points and now can build new projects.

The lab provides a platform for collaboration, research and development and aims to push the boundaries of what is possible with robotics and AI, as well as to  explore new ways of applying technology, Rafif Srour, vice Dean of IE School of Science and Technology, pointed out.

“We are confident that the research and development taking place here will help to advance the field of robotics and AI, and bring us closer to realizing the full potential of these technologies,” she added. “Students have spent endless afternoons, weekends, nights, creating these experiments we are witnessing now. This is an exciting moment not only for the School of Science and Technology, but for the entire IE University.”

After the demonstration, Ikhlaq Shidu, Dean of IE School of Science and Technology, applauded the students’ enthusiasm and drive.

“The lab just opened today and you guys already know how it works. It’s a huge step forward. You’re not being dragged into it. You’re leading the way,” Sidhu said.
