Graduates recommend tech certifications in IE School of Science & Technology

We caught up with two recent graduates of the Master in Business Analytics & Data Science to give you an inside look at our school’s methodology. Both achieved tech certifications and excelled throughout their studies.

Early careers and choosing the Master in Business Analytics & Data Science

“I’m from Tahiti,” Leana Barbion tells us. “It’s a very small island in the South Pacific, south of Hawaii, next to Bora Bora. If you say Tahiti, people usually know it because it’s famous for tourism. Now I work for BMC Software as an Associate Solution Engineer. I’ve worked in New York, London, and many other places.”

Jaime Bustamante‘s story is just as exciting: “I’m from Peru, but I currently live in Spain, working remotely for a company based in Uruguay. I’m a Senior Analytics Engineer at Trafilea, a company specializing in shapewear and beauty products. My career journey’s been diverse—I’ve worked in various industries like consumer goods, logistics, e-commerce, and health tech in the U.S., and now I’m back in e-commerce.”

“My main goal at IE was to acquire technical skills, particularly in coding and data handling,” says Jaime.

When explaining why she chose to study at IE School of Science & Technology, Leana points to its location and the flexibile approach to learning: “I was living in New York and wanted to learn Spanish, so I moved to Madrid,” says Leana. “I wanted to change my professional path because I was doing finance and economics for my undergrad. IE was the best-ranked school and allowed me to transfer from management to SciTech. I didn’t need a technical background, which was a massive positive for me since I didn’t really have one.”

Achieving specialized tech certifications

Leana was instantly taken by the program: “I loved it. I remember a Python class being the turning point. I found it really fun, and I loved the instant gratification of building something and seeing the results right away.”

Leana decided to challenge herself to get the most out of her studies: “IE gave me the technical knowledge but also the business understanding I needed to move forward.”

“I did a Google Cloud certification, which was part of the curriculum,” Leana continues. “But the tech certification that really mattered to me was the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner. I wasn’t planning on passing that, but somehow, after studying in my extra time and taking a few practice exams, I managed. It was during a super hectic period with finals and group projects, too, so I was ecstatic.”

Jaime also found the certifications to be integral for career progression: “In terms of certifications, I’ve completed AWS and Microsoft certifications. The AWS certification was the most impactful for my current work, especially in meetings where I can now understand the majority of discussions around tools like Athena and Redshift. I also found the Power BI certification helpful, but advanced certifications like AWS and Tableau have been key for my current role.”

Career advice and future aspirations in professional tech

Studying the Master in Business Analytics & Data Science has ignited profound change in Leana’s life: “At BMC, I’m an Associate Solution Engineer, which means I’m the technical person in the sales process. It’s exactly what I was looking for—I never thought I’d be in tech. Now I think it’s the coolest thing.” Jaime similarly found the program met all his expectations: “I accessed the program through a scholarship,” he says. “It was great, because all my peers had work experience. You can see the difference in how you learn together. You handle practical situations better.”

“I see myself leading a startup in Artificial Intelligence, as that’s where the coolest jobs are,” says Leana. “In 20 years, I’d love to work at a big company like Amazon or settle into a safe, long-term position.” Jaime also sees Artificial Intelligence being key to his profession: “Looking ahead, AI will play a significant role in shaping my job, especially as we’re working on projects that use GPT to replicate tasks like answering sales queries. AI could eventually automate tasks like gathering requirements and translating them into code, though cybersecurity remains a challenge. That’s why these tech certifications are so important.”

“If you’re unsure where you’re headed, research roles in your industry and identify the skills and certifications commonly required,” Jaime continues. “Tailor your learning to what’s most relevant to your desired path, especially in fast-evolving fields like e-commerce or AI.”
