International relations and law are critical fields that shape the modern world. Which is why we’ve decided to merge these two disciplines together into one complete program.
Read on to see how Filipe Serrano combined both in the Dual Degree Master in International Relations + Master of Laws (LL.M.)—and set himself up for career success.
Why choose a dual degree?
Filipe’s journey began after completing his undergraduate law degree in Portugal, during which time he found a passion for international dispute resolution—particularly in arbitration, mediation and negotiation.
“I sought a master’s program that would complement my legal background while simultaneously enhancing it with a strong international outlook.”

The Dual Degree program stood out for its “diverse and highly interdisciplinary curriculum,” allowing him to develop expertise in international disputes alongside essential topics like ethical discourse and public policy.
How does the dual degree structure benefit your career?
The intensive Dual Degree takes place over 22 months, challenging students to broaden their horizons and tackle pressing global issues. The Master in International Relations covers key areas like Geopolitics and Diplomacy, International Economics & Business and Global Governance. Additionally, students can specialize in specific geographical regions, engage in language studies and complete hands-on final projects.
Upon completing the Master in International Relations, students transition to the Master of Laws (LL.M.), which provides deep legal expertise paired with broader skills. Filipe appreciates the program’s flexibility, as it allows him to pursue specialized diplomas in areas like International Business Law or International Dispute Resolution.
“The program stood out for its diverse and highly interdisciplinary curriculum,” says Filipe. “And the IE Law School research labs like Lawtomation, IE Center for European Studies and the LawAhead Center on the Legal Profession are vibrant hubs for academic research and knowledge exchange.”
How do our teaching methods enhance your skills?
A key differentiator between IE University and other institutions is its focus on hands-on learning. Filipe found value in the practice-oriented experiences at both IE School of Politics, Economics & Global Affairs and IE Law School.
Amongst these experiences, Filipe highlights the legal clinic and opportunities to work with NGOs and startups. These experiences taught him to apply legal theories to real-world scenarios, developing essential skills in legal analysis and public speaking. “Studying at IE allows us to tackle issues head-on,” Filipe says, citing his experience in the Capstone Project with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia.
This helped him address tangible, real-world problems—the kind of hands-on learning that’s core to our teaching methodology.

Hands-on learning also incorporates the peerless network that students gain at IE University. Filipe enjoyed close contact with experienced professors throughout, affirming that their real-world knowledge “massively surpassed” his expectations. Filipe also enjoyed the vibrant campus life and abundance of clubs and organizations that cater to diverse interests. This environment feeds into the dynamics of modern international relations and law, helping students prepare for multicultural work environments.
Looking ahead to a career in international relations & law
Filipe envisions a career where he can apply his acquired skills in an impact-oriented setting. “I aim to work in a multicultural environment where I can apply my international legal expertise effectively,” he expresses. Consequently, his aspirations range from positions at international bodies and leading law firms to playing pivotal roles in global policy-making.
Filipe encourages those interested in the Dual Degree Master in International Relations + Master of Laws (LL.M.) to seize the opportunity: “If you are passionate about law and international relations, thrive in immersive environments, and seek a student-centered approach, this is the place to be.”
