Ana Barreira López
Ana Barreira is a senior lawyer, and founding Director of the Instituto Internacional de Derecho y Medio Ambiente (IIDMA- International Institute for Law and the Environment). She is co-chair of the energy and environmental section of the Madrid Bar Association. She holds two LL.Ms (Master of Laws) degrees: in Environmental Law from London University (1993) and in International Legal Studies from New York University (1996) and is a Law Graduate from Universidad Complutense (1990).
She has 30 years experience in the field of sustainability providing her a strategic view of this field. She started her career at the Environmental Law Department of Allen & Overy in London in 1993. In 2001-2002 was senior legal advisor for the 2002 Spanish European Union Presidency focusing on the UN World Summit for Sustainable Development. She has worked in projects related to environmental law and policy in different Balkan countries, Mexico and Turkey as consultant for the World Bank and the European Commission as well as for the compliance mechanism of the European Investment Bank. She litigates in environmental matters. Ana is member of the IUCN Environmental Law Commission and of the BoDs of Oceana UK and of Common Home for Humanity (CHH). She has authored articles and books on environmental law including a handbook on International Environmental Law and writes for Spanish media and gives public speeches on a variety of sustainable development topics. Ana has taught international and environmental law and policy and governance at IE, TEC Monterrey (México), EOI, Complutense University and Carlos III University. She participates in UN environmental and sustainable development negotiations including climate COPs. Among her areas of expertise are: biodiversity, climate change and energy transition, water protection and environmental democracy.
