María José Sanz Sánchez

Dr. María J. Sanz is IKERBASQUE Professor and Director of the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), centre of excellence of the Basque Government and Unit of Excellence Maria de Maeztu, where she leads a multidisciplinary research team with the view that the Climate Change poses a challenge to humanity that requires the integration of different understandings, worldviews and innovative approaches, and thus the collaboration and integration among scientists from different scientific disciplines, from the start. She was Air Pollution Effects and Carbon Cycle Program Director at the Centre for Environmental Studies of the Mediterranean (CEAM) in Valencia for 15 years, while advising the Spanish Government on Land Uses and Forestry issues at the UNFCCC multilateral negotiations for seven years, as well as the EU Commission and US EPA on Air Quality regulations. Member of the Executive Board of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the UNFCCC and co-Chair of its Afforestation and Reforestation Meth Panel in 2007. Senior Officer at the UNFCCC Secretariat in Bonn for five years (2007-2011) and UNREDD Programme Coordinator at FAO for four years (2012-2015). She received the Noble Peace Price in 2007 as IPCC Author to which she is being contributing since 2003 to various reports. She is being advisor of the Green Climate Fund, BioCarbon Fund of the World Bank, CIFOR, FAO and several developing country governments on Forestry and Land Use issues.
