Environmental DNA Lab
The Environmental DNA & Microbiology Lab teaches students to use molecular tools to identify and detect phytopathogens that cannot be detected by traditional techniques. Students will put theory to practice by using PCR techniques for phytopathogens with DNA genome and RT-PCR techniques for RNA phytopathogens.         Â
Students will also study microorganisms in accordance with technical and biosafety standards to identify the etiological agent of an infection and determine susceptibility to certain antimicrobial agents.Â

Make a big deal out of tiny things
Although the things you’re studying are small, you can use them to make a big impact. The Environmental DNA & Microbiology Lab gives you the chance to use cutting-edge tools to investigate microscopic organisms like bacteria, algae, fungi and more to help find solutions to mitigate environmental damage.

Hands-on work with your own samples
Take hands-on learning to the next level with the Environmental DNA & Microbiology Lab. Your work is not restricted to the lab table—you’ll be out in the field collecting your own samples on field trips to sites including the Sierra de Guadarrama UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve in Segovia.Â

Create a lasting impact
The Environmental DNA & Microbiology Lab is the perfect place to use your research to inform your capstone project. Covering anything from pathogen transfer to microbiological responses to climate change, the lab will prepare you to present a new topic for groundbreaking research that will have a lasting impact.Â
