Emily Taonga Cole
After growing up in Zambia, I’ve always been interested in the idea of helping people in a way that enhances our symbiotic relationship with nature. My mom is a cook, so we were always exploring new foods, challenging the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ of the kitchen and its connection to the earth. That’s why I love to make food as a way to bring people together. I also love to read, draw, sing and create music. My favorite pastime is exploring different areas of interest and trying to understand new concepts kinesthetically, both in and out of the classroom.
"My passion for architecture lies in learning about sustainable architecture."
Immersed in community
Emily Taonga Cole grew up firmly connected to nature. The Zambian-born undergrad understood the complex yet interdependent bond between humans and their environment early on. This fueled her passion for sustainability and her resolve to dedicate her career to the protection of natural ecosystems.
It’s no surprise then that, when it was finally time to pursue higher education, she chose to do so with the Bachelor in Architectural Studies at IE University. For her, it was the perfect way to combine her interests in the environment with that of helping people in a meaningful, effective way. Furthermore, “Architecture is one of the largest contributors to climate change,” she explains. Emily was ready to use her skill set to address this challenge and transform the industry for good.
But this isn’t an easy mandate to fulfill. She would have to learn more about sustainable architecture, for a start. Luckily, the program immerses students in green design from day one through dedicated modules complemented by regular workshops, seminars and masterclasses. But Emily doesn’t want to stop at just creating sustainable designs, but to go further and ensure they are as cost-efficient, accessible and affordable as possible for all, despite socioeconomic divides. “One day, I will hopefully be able to have this at the center of what I do,” she states.
Emily loves her technical classes the most as they dive into the structural and construction side of architecture. She’s also enjoyed exploring the history of architecture along with its evolution around the world. But her favorite part of the program so far has been the design studios. Informative and thoroughly hands-on, they have allowed her to apply classroom learnings in real-life projects. In fact, she completed her most memorable project in Design Studio 5: Technique at the start of her third year in the program. It involved analyzing an actual structure in depth and then using wood to reimagine its form, program and function. “It has been interesting to work on such an assignment in a group,” she admits, revealing that this approach has enriched her studies while helping her form bonds with her peers.
What’s more, she’s taken full advantage of the state-of-the-art facilities available to students of the Bachelor in Architectural Studies. Among these are the D-Lab and the Fab Lab, where Emily and other students can access larger equipment for laser or wood cutting, 3D printing and more.
Emily particularly enjoys studying in Segovia, as its close-knit character has significantly improved her academic journey. Also, “I love being able to get from one place to the other in five minutes, so my time here has truly been appreciated,” she says. However, she’s more thrilled with the community she’s been able to establish, not just within Segovia, but also in the clubs and organizations she’s become part of. Emily currently serves as the president of the IE Africa Club and is a member of the IE Music Club too. As she points out, “Having an opportunity to do what I love, develop new skills and hone my talents outside of architecture has been very beneficial.”
For anyone considering the Bachelor in Architectural Studies, she advises pursuing the field out of a true passion. “Architecture is not for the weak; you need to be completely determined to achieve the goal you are striving for.” Emily emphasizes that doing your best is the only effective path to success, both in class and further into professional life.
