Diego, Isabel and Laura, current students of the program, decided to get together in the Robotics & AI Lab to bring an idea of their own to life. Through their collaborative project Luna, they decided to explore new use cases for AI, investigating its utility in daily life. Luna is a simple concept on paper, but its impact promises to be significant and far-reaching.
The project structure
Luna is sci-fi made real. Born from the three students’ collective interest in the power of AI, it represents another step toward a new future—one where technology seamlessly integrates with daily life.
Diego, Isabel and Laura set out to develop an innovative solution that would harness AI’s vast capabilities to optimize daily routines. The result? Luna, a powerful, multifaceted virtual assistant designed to elevate everyday experience.
Designing Luna
Advanced yet enriching, Luna sets new standards in tech integration and holistic, user-friendly design. It offers a wide range of functionalities, including:
- Calendar integration Sync with your personal calendar for up-to-date notifications on class schedules, group meetings, event times and more.
- News delivery Stay informed with periodic news updates throughout the day.
- Weather updates Get accurate weather forecasts tailored to your unique IP address.
- Music recommendations Create personalized playlists based on your musical preferences.
With Luna, you can be more efficient, more productive and manage your schedule better. User-friendliness is one of the team’s key priorities, guaranteed through a clear, attractive user interface (UI) and extensive integration. All this is made possible by incorporating different technologies, such as:
- Python for its flexibility, robust programming language and massive libraries capable of hosting Luna’s AI, API and other functionalities.
- Streamlit for the UI design, leading to an interactive, responsive application.
- OpenAI API, to drive Luna’s AI capabilities and empower it to generate human-like responses.
- Spotify API for song recommendations.
- Weather and localization APIs for Luna’s weather forecasting abilities.
Gaining lessons from AI
For the student team, Luna was a chance to gain expertise and push the bounds of AI. And the team did indeed experience significant skill development: by untangling the threads of API integration, they gained valuable knowledge and hands-on practice with APIs, Python programming and AI technologies.
But the project taught them much more than they expected about teamwork, communication and collaborative problem-solving. It’s also sparked an enduring passion for AI and robotics that promises to shape the rest of their career paths.
Diego, Isabel and Laura hope their collaboration extends well into the future. They recently availed a new “chat mode” feature that allows Luna to preserve a user’s historic interactions and preferences to deliver more tailored recommendations. They’ve also started working on the next version of Luna, which will leverage emotion detection techniques for appropriate responses and greater personalization.
