How might we inject critical thinking, critical pedagogy, and collaborative learning into the Philippine public education system in order to instill social reform? In order to understand this, we examine the current curriculum and where and why it’s lacking. Filipino youth fall behind on numerous metrics as analyzed by numerous local and foreign institutions like the OECD, the UN, UNICEF, and more. Furthermore, an analysis on the regions of the country in terms of academic and teaching performance is done in order to justify where the strategies and designs will be implemented.
Following this, an understanding of the differences amongst, critical thinking, critical pedagogy, and collaborative learning is created and understood. Through the study of different educational institutions that have used these concepts, like the Black Mountain College, Montessori Schools, De La Salle University, and more, we looked to understand the shared values and principles of each institution and how it will be adapted when placed in lower resource settings.
Finally it was the design and creation of these strategies, methodologies, and activities all visualized into 2 books. The 1st book has an in-depth study on the context and institutions that fed into the design while the 2nd book is just the visualizations of the concepts and activities for teachers to use.
